Welcome back to another post! We are continuing the topic of the series, Splatoon!
Last time, we discussed how we got a glimpse of their cuisine in their world.
This time we’re going to talk about the idol designs in Splatoon 1!
While each idol group talks about the current stages available before it cycles onto the next, discuss their sides on a Splatfest and each have their own role to play in a game’s story mode (which we highly suggest looking into yourself sometime!), we’re going to mostly talk about the ones introduced in the first game, along with their design and their personalities.
Starting at the beginning we have…
The Squid Sisters!
[Left – Artwork, Right – Splatoon 1 Models]
[Actually they’re both cousins, this is just a stage name for the duo.]
Here we have Callie and Marie, the main idol hosts in Splatoon 1. They are a duo who commentated in Inkopolis Plaza where it’s the main hub in the first game, along with the duo idols singing songs often heard in the game. (Note, but not all of them! There are bands in the game that do their own thing and have their own singer(s) as well.)
Let’s start off with Callie.
Callie
[Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Render]
Callie is the more extroverted, perky and naive (in the innocence sense) member of the Squid Sister duo. She wears magenta as her main color of choice and is high energy a lot of the time in contrast to her cousin, Marie. Since tentacles in an Inkling and Octoling’s humanoid form reflects hair, Callie has long hair which forms a bow on the back. Callie also wears a hair accessory or small hat that resembles ika somen on top of a shiso leaf as described on Inkipedia.
On the flipside we also have…
Marie
[Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Render]
Marie is the more introverted, mild and snarky (but still fairly friendly) member of the Squid Sister duo. She wears lime green as her main color of choice and is low energy usually in contrast to her cousin, Callie. Her hair is on the shorter side but also is in a matching bow form as well. Her hair accessory or small hat resembles ikayaki (grilled squid).

[Even if not their normal colors, still showcases their dynamic.]
As you can see, both the characters are a fun pair that bounces off of each other. That and the references to human food in their design and their English name. Callie and Marie? Calamari? Amazing. Callie loves her puns much to Marie’s dismay and the franchise itself loves making the puns whether it be in their designs or names in various languages.
Interestingly, besides their personalities being opposites, their main color of choice as well are on the opposite sides of the color wheel as well. While not directly opposites, they are still on opposite ends enough which aid in their dynamics where they bounce off of one another. Despite that, they have a strong bond, having known each other since they were very young.

Some people looking into the series are often surprised by the fact that they’re cousins, not sisters. However, their bond reminds those of sibling banter (but as someone who has a lot of cousins, they might as well be additional siblings in a way).
And that’s it on the Splatoon showcase posts! Hopefully y’all had as much fun or more as we did! If you missed our prior post, read into the hint of cuisine the world of Splatoon has.
