Susie (Chapter 1)

[Susie’s usual Overworld attire.]
Susie is one of the main characters in deltarune. The audience’s first impression of her is when Susie comes to class, even later than Kris did. However, despite that similarity, the contrast is, Kris uses the door normally, Susie KICKS the door open. She then asks if she’s late but her teacher, Alpyhs denies such a thing and quickly catches her up to speed on getting a partner for the group project. Which is Kris because they also came late but there’s the the possibility Alpyhs thought no one would join up with Susie despite some players noticing Noelle seems to be the only one who likes Susie.
Back to Susie’s design, she wears a jacket, a white shirt, shoes and damaged jeans. Her hair covers her eyes as well and her teeth is yellow. (Note: In this world there’s humans and monsters in the Light World, while the Dark World are implied to be made of objects.) She is a purple dinosaur monster, with her hair being a darker shade and her skin being a mid tone warm shade of purple.
When her teacher notices the chalk is gone, she asks if anyone has seen it and threatens punishment if no one speaks up. Interestingly, when trying to do the threat, she looks at Susie, almost as if she knows but is afraid to confront her about it and instead makes Susie and Kris go to the supply closet to get some more. Susie slams the door on her way out to do so and when Kris leaves the classroom as well, they and the Player view Susie eating chalk.
Note, the Player has a better view of this than Kris likely does, but they either saw enough or Susie admitting it makes Kris know if they didn’t realize it when the Player did. And also of note, eating chalk can mean many things but as the chapter goes on, it seems like Susie is just very hungry and is driven to eat chalk due to this very reason.
This is proven when in the Dark World, when Susie not only is trying to go home, she eat a harmless chef’s cake and later, when Susie is hanging out with Lancer (because she defected to his side), Ralsei comments on what they’re eating and Susie rebuttals with the fact that all she had for breakfast was chalk. Despite joining the bad guy side, Susie seems to be goofing off and playing with Lancer, not really harming Kris nor Ralsei. Also Susie’s clothing changes upon being in the Dark World as well, besides gaining an Ax weapon, she wears boots, a jacket, non damaged black pants, retains her shirt but also gets additional punk arm bracelets.

As time goes on, Susie does accept Ralsei’s apology for being so harsh about her efforts from earlier and just in time for the bout against the Spade King. During this adventure Susie had found companionship with not just Lancer, who apricates her efforts but is willing to work with Kris and Ralsei and listen to them to work as a team in order to go home at least. Susie very much has a sibling like bond with Lancer so seeing the Spade King, his father treat him terribly and threatening his life is more than enough for Susie to get violent with him in order to protect Lancer.
When at the Spade King’s “mercy”, Kris defending her from a attack definitely left an impression on Susie. Besides her hair cut symbolizing the change, she does get more friendlier with Kris and Ralsei going forward.
Susie (Chapter 2)

[Susie’s symbolistic haircut.]
Chapter 2 takes place the day after, where Susie arrived early to class just to be with Kris to continue Dark World stuff with. Clearly both bonding as friends due to the events of the previous day. This chapter you don’t spend much time with Susie which makes sense, it’s in favor for another character named Noelle but Susie isn’t completely divorced from this chapter either. Despite splitting off with Ralsei to spend some fun time with him, Susie also does return to the narrative and here we see her interact with Berdly and Noelle.
With Berdly being stuck up and annoying, Susie does give him crap for said behavior but when he actually opens up, Susie settle more into friendly insults with him, showcasing how with some people, Susie will give them nasty if they give her nasty.
With Noelle, Susie is nice to, due to Noelle giving her a pencil one time in class when she didn’t have one. They both get to talk during the chapter too, even if Susie lies to Noelle that the Dark World is a dream but despite that it actually makes Noelle mellow out to talk about how she feels about Susie without realizing she’s actually talking to her. Susie only lied to keep Noelle safe but also claims that Dark Worlds are her and Kris’ thing.
Speaking of her bond with Kris, another thing to note is that she notices how Kris is bothered from the fight against the superboss in the Normal Route, noticing they have goosebumps. And it’s only Susie that manages to get Kris to feel a bit comfortable again by getting a snicker out of them by vividly reacting to Kris wanting to borrow her jacket. In fact, Susie questions what happened with that fight despite Ralsei wanting to not really talk about it.
After the adventure, she sleeps over at Kris’ house, but not before turning on the TV and asking who they’re gonna take to the festival. Susie also holds back her rude behavior and vernacular when meeting Kris’ mother, Toriel.
Summary
To do a brief overall; Susie, she wears damaged jeans. While it is a style to do so, Susie’s demeaner seems to imply otherwise. How she eats chalk and when Toriel lets Susie sleep over due to Kris making a new friend, she instructs Susie to call her folks so they’d know. Susie, goes up to the house phone but then quickly kicks back on the couch. While we don’t know if it’s neglect, sibling favoritism over another abuse, etc, we do know this implies she has a unfavorable homelife of some kind.
Let’s also talk about Susie’s color in her design for a hot minute. She has purple in her color palette, even in the Dark World, in fact, it’s pronounced even further. With her skin slightly getting brighter with her hair being more purple in color.

[Comparing the colors of Overworld and Darkworld sprites. Purple do be powerful indeed.]
Purple can mean things like royalty (which Susie doesn’t seem to be), mystery, power, and such. In a positive context, it could mean things like compassion, fantasy, wisdom, creativity, inspires, encourages and such but in a negative context it could mean sensitive, overly vigilant, immature, emotional, arrogance, detachment and so on and so forth.
In Chapter 1, Susie acted very emotional and didn’t really listen to anyone, coming off as arrogant unless they’d help her back home or praised her own efforts for once. When given an apology and actual friendship, Susie lowers her walls and returns such kindness with loyalty and when thinking Lancer betrayed her when he just wanted his father to not kill his newfound friends, Susie assumed the worst and went back to being detached like earlier but despite that, she couldn’t bring herself to kill Lancer. And that’s the thing, Susie may talk all big and can deal the damage but she doesn’t kill. She doesn’t bite Kris’ face off, she didn’t kill any enemy, either leaving them out cold or to let them run.
Thankfully, Susie doesn’t go for the kill, because doing so let her slow down and salvage her friendship with Lancer.
In Chapter 2 when Ralsei offers to teach her a healing spell called “Heal Prayer”, Susie puts her own creative spin on a healing spell of her own. While it currently doesn’t heal much, it does imply potential in the future. But despite things like that, Susie is still a child, a teenager. Teens will be emotional and such but these examples shown showcase how purple seems to be a very good fit for Susie’s personality and journey so far.
That’s all for the Susie’s part of today’s update but we’re uploading a double feature, so go on and read the Holiday Reindeer, Noelle!
Already read hers and still want some more deltarune? We talked about Ralsei just last week!
