Building anything these days is expensive and the costs seem to be on an ever climbing trajectory caused by inflation and the rising cost of materials. People trying to complete simple home renovations or build brand new structures are feeling the burn of these ever rising costs and having to make adjustments to offset their bills. The Great Mosque of Mecca
Completed in 2021, The Great Mosque of Mecca or Masjid al-Haramm, is located in the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. American architecture firm, KSA, led the project and oversaw its $120 Billion US dollar budget for their client the Government of Saudi Arabia.
While Hinkley Point C nuclear power station
While Hinkley Point C nuclear power station located in Somerset, United Kingdom holds the second place spot for most expensive building its budget is only one third of the cost of building the The Great Mosque of Mecca. This $40 Billion US dollar building is set to be completed by the year 2027 for client EDF Energy. Two architecture firms are working together to complete this project: Bouygues TP and Laing O’Rourke.
Plant and Vogtle
Plant and Vogtle (units three and four) hold the third place spot with a $30 Billion US dollar budget. Located in Waynesboro, Georgia, USA the structures were completed in 2023 by the engineering, construction, and project management firm Bechtel for client Georgia Power.
ITER building
Fourth place is held by the ITER building in Saint Paul Iès Durance, France. The building is set to be completed in 2025 by architect Bernard Bigot. This highly complex project is a global collaboration with contributions from China, Europe, India, Japan, Korea, Russia, and the United States of America.
