30 Rockefeller Plaza, otherwise known as the Comcast Building, is one of New York City’s most iconic pieces of architecture. The building is the 66 story skyscraper sitting at the center of the Plaza and is nicknamed 30 Rock. The building is designed in an art deco style by architect Raymond Hood. As the 65th tallest building in the world and 28th tallest building in the United States of America it is no surprise the building is packed with important cultural and entertainment history.
While it has been called home by many important tenants throughout the years, none are as famous as the current tenant NBC. NBC Studios, NBC News, MSNBC, WNBC, and NBCUniversal Cable are all part of NBC’s presence in the building. Additionally, many popular shows are filmed on permanent sets throughout the building. These include the Today Show, the Kelly Clarkson Show, Saturday Night Live (SNL), The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and Late Night With Seth Meyers. Because of the heavy TV show presence celebrities can be spotted coming in and out of the building’s multiple doors. If you walk by and see paparazzi gathering, consider stopping for a few minutes, you never know who might appear!
The lobby is right inside the main entrance through the revolving bronze and glass doors. These doors are iconic in their own right so make sure to stop and take a photo.
Things to consider when planning your trip to 30 Rock:
- Buy tickets early and online – entry is limited and only allowed with a reservation. Relying on last minute tickets, especially during the holidays, is risky.
- Consider timing – While the most popular time to visit is at sunset, note that the crowds at this time can be overwhelming for some groups with small children. There is never a bad time to visit so pick the time that works best for you!
- Stop by the Weather Room cafe – Grab a cocktail, bagel, or sweet treat and enjoy the wonderful view from the 67th floor.
